Toothbrush Virus That Just Went Through Your Home

Oh my! Toothbrush virus germs in my home?

The Toothbrush Virus and Bacteria Imagery is Alarming…

You’ve heard that your’s and your child’s toothbrush needs to be replaced every 3-6 months. You’ve heard that you need to toss a toothbrush if you or your child have had a virus, cold, cold sores or any kind of sickness. (Remember to throw out the toothbrushes of everyone who has been sick with flu in your home.) That’s a lot of tossing!

The reasoning behind changing out the ‘germed up’ toothbrush (toothbrush virus) is to not continue to re-infect your children by using the ‘germ carrying’ toothbrushes.

Since we’re discussing ‘toothbrush virus rules’, I thought I’d bring up this one that has stuck in my thoughts!  According to an article in February issue of the Costco Connection, Just for Fun:  Health Trivia posted this:

#5. Brush it Off:  Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least

6 feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from the flush.

(referencing http://www.dentalgentlcare.com/).

Think on that for awhile and then get your tape measure, measure the distance for yours and your children’s  toothbrushes if the brushes are sitting in the open, less than 6 feet from  the toilet.

Have any thoughts on toothbrush virus?  Love to hear your comments!

    Hi Donna,
Thank you for sharing this icky post! I have never subscribed to the open air storage of toothbrushes keeping ours in the top drawer instead. I hope that is enough to block any airborne particles!
    I’m sharing this.

Linda, I had to change the photo because it bothered me so much. Having a toilet open and a toothbrush near it gave me the willies! Hope the new photo doesn’t disappoint, because the info is excellent.

God, oh god. This subject always gives me the creeps. I had issues with brushing my teeth when I was growing up because, even without the benefit of studies and the like, I knew in my heart this was happening.

I guess sometimes a little paranoia pays off.

I now use a UV sanitizer regularly and keep the cap on my brush head when not in use. It isn’t perfect, but it’s better than nothing.

Oh, and if you want a fun (and yet also disgusting) treatment of the subject, Mythbusters covered the whole “toothbrush in your bathroom” subject in, er, it was the first season, I think. Worth a watch.
