Thieves Credit Card Scan..Find Out How

Illegal Credit Card Scan Makes You Want to Scream!

Illegal credit card scan has been happening for awhile now, but this TV report really nails it for how it happens and how you can avoid the ‘Thieves that Scan’.  I found out about it three years ago and purchased a metal card case to put all my credit cards into.  Two years after that we signed up for Nexus passes in Washington State to cross the Canadian border more quickly.  When the cards arrived, each was inside a foil lined card case.  To me that was proof positive of ‘RFID  (Radio Frequency Identification)  scanning’ happening.

Even having the cards wrapped in tinfoil will keep them from being scanned.  Almost sounds like making a tin foil hat to keep aliens from reading your thoughts…right?

Using a Hotel Key Card as a Credit Card

Watch closely in this video while the speaker scans a credit card, then puts the card info onto a ‘hotel keycard’.  The last step is him using that hotel keycard to purchase by sliding it himself on the receiver at McDonald’s.  The card is accepted and he walks out with his lunch.  Since he slid it himself, no one paid any particular attention to his card.  The speaker had permission from his victim, the credit card holder…and the restaurant to show how easy it is in this video.

Tell your spouse, your parents, your grandparents and your friends.  No need to ever be scanned illegally again

Should credit card companies be putting that chip in our cards?  Sound off here in the comments!

Its so easy to use and makes life quicker though!

The scam does only work for small amounts. Couple that with the fact that the bank will refund people who are scammed and you feel a little better but saying all of that I still think that the chip should be optional and its up to the card holder to decide.

      Kayla,
I like your idea for making the chip optional. Maybe in the future!

I was actually thinking more about this last night and wondered if it was a good idea. If a customer decided to take the chip and something bad happened does that make it there fault and something they need to be held responsible for or is it on the bank still?

Kayla, I noticed on the video the man pryed the chip out of the card. I think he did that just to show people what it looked like. If we all start pulling the chip out of cards, I have no idea what that would do to our ability to use the card. If you want to know, call you credit card company and ask them. It’s also worth asking them the question you posed, “If a customer decided to take the chip and something bad happened does that make it their fault and something they need to be held responsible for or is it on the bank still?” I suspect their answer will unilateraly be to leave the chip in the card.

Be sure to cut up those hotel key cards with your info on them! My hairdresser, Debbie Ford passed on that tip to me.

Yikes, I will have to update how I keep my credit cards in my wallet and do it for my hubby while I am at it. Love the mention of tin-foil hats Donna. Signs is a good movie!
    Thanks for the helpful tip.

    Linda,
My husband didn’t believe me until we received our Nexus passes. And yes, Signs is an excellent movie. I pictured them sitting on the sofa looking like Hershey Kisses when I wrote the post!
