“Frosting Book Character Christmas Cookies”
Christmas cookies are everywhere, but did you ever do your favorite book character in them? This works best for a child’s picture book, but if you’re an extraordinary artist, you can make any favorite book cover or character you like!
The quasi-tutorial here is for those that can make simple characters. I’ll be using Orville from his book, The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar an Amelia from her book,The Adventure of Amelia Airheart Butterfly in bye! bye! Dragonfly!
I laid out all the ingredients assuming you would have some circular sugar cookies. My cookies came from a refrigerated roll purchased at a grocery store. Other items you’ll need:
- large red gumballs for Orville’s nose
- maraschino cherries for Amelia’s nose (hers is smaller than Orville’s)
- food coloring Red, Blue, Green and Black …leave a little white to the side
- butter cream frosting mixed up
- seperate dishes for each color
- antennae of licorice laces, or gummy spaghetti, or whatever else you can think of
- toothpicks with a warning to those who eat the cookie
- pictures to copy
Pick which color to work with first. I used red to mix with white and come up with a pink for Amelia. Then mix pink and a little more red for her cheeks.
The toothpicks are broken in half and inserted into the antennae and then the cookie. Make sure you’re keeping it in the cookie and not able poking through to the back surface.
The cherry goes on just above the center of the circle.
The next cookie up is Orville and then they’ll be finished together with the black lines.
Put green food coloring into white frosting and mix. Spread on the cookie. Next get the large red gumball (look in bulk candies for them) and slice it in half. Place Orville’s nose just above the center of the circle also. You can see I had a head start on getting the black lines on his face. Yes, I’m using a toothpick to do the lines. I’d recommend buying a tube of black gel frosting with a small, small tip. You’ll find it a lot easier than I did with a toothpick!
Orville has a simple smile curved up on each side. His eyes are simple lines in a V shape that show his eyes closed. His antennae go on like Amelia’s…toothpick broken in half put into the antennae and then into the cookie.
Put the cookies in the refrigerator to set up. WARNING! Be sure to tell people about the toothpicks in the antennae and top of the heads. And warn them about the bubble gum if little children are eating the cookies!
Donna – These are absolutely adorable! I can see how your gift of ceramics comes into baking, too!
(Btw, I’m sorry I haven’t gotten the prints to you sooner but they’ll be on their way this week.)
Rachel, The cookies were brought on by a cookie exchange mixed with a low-key author signing. Everything turned out great!
It will be wonderful to see the prints. I’ve been excited about them!
So cute! My kids are teenagers and while we still cook and bake together, we haven’t done anything like this in a while.
Christine,
No matter how old we are, the child inside still delights in Christmas cookies….especially the ‘decorated’ kind. The down side is, the frosting we lick and cookies we eat while making them tends to become permanently affixed to our bodies. :O)
Thanks for stopping by!
How very cute! Thanks for all your kind comments on my blog. Jacob and I just printed and colored some of your coloring sheets yesterday!
How wonderful! I’m so glad you let me know that you downloaded and colored the pages! Yay! Can you take a picture and let me see?
As for you and Jacob, you really can see the love in the camera shot..both ways! He’s a blessing to you!
Oh my gosh! These are SOOOOOO cute!!!!
