“It Rains on the Just and the Unjust Alike”
“It rains on the just and the unjust alike”. This phrase can be traced to the biblical Matthew 5:45, “He… sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust..” A scholium on the verse by Charles, Baron Bowen (1835-94) ….
The rain it raineth on the just
And also on the unjust fella:
But chiefly on the just, because
The unjust steals the just’s umbrella!
Scholium means “an explanatory note or comment,” deriving from the Greek for “school” and first recorded in the early 16th century.

What a clever man!
Hi Donna:
What if the just man gives the unjust man an umbrella of his own? -HA!
How are you? Hope you holidays were good.
Lance
Hi, Lance,
I wonder how many times people have wondered that since the mid 1800’s? You might be the very first one to have noticed and thought about it!
Good to see you again! I’ve been busy plugging away, and generally recovering from the holidays. We had all our family home…wow! Today’s post was the last ‘free ride’ from posting ahead. Now it’s back to work!!

This saying featured on an episode of Postman Pat from my childhood, when it was referenced by the local Vicar. For some reason, it has always stayed with me, and I finally know it’s origin; Thanks!
