The Day I Almost Was Not
The Day I Almost Was Not & Do You Believe in Angels?
Funny how you remember things from the past. I’d read and heard the story retold about our near death experience, but picked it up to read again.
Three of our family of four were home that morning..my mother, brother and me. She had turned on a hot water heater to do the laundry and within a few moments my brother, 3, and myself, 2, were tired and didn’t feel well. Mom put us to bed and began to feel faint also. Gas!
It was in the 50’s when gas water heaters were in the home and apartments. Ours was defective. With her last ounce of strength, my mother dragged herself to the phone and dialed the operator, mumbling for help. They tried to keep my mother on the line but she was already numbed by the silent spreading gas. Then they sounded back what is called a double ring. The noise revived my mother just enough to whisper our telephone number. The operator checked the address on a cross file. Finding it she called the police and fire departments. The next words are theirs from the magazine article…
“The woman and her children slept the sleep from which there is often no awakening.”
Two fire rescue squads pulled up in front of our home. We never realized that rubber face masks were being strapped to our faces, that inhalators were being turned on. Forty minutes after the firemen arrived, we were all revived and out of danger.
There were a few more times in my life that I ‘almost was not’ a part of this world any longer. I believe God has angels placed with us, to protect us at times like these. My mother told me when I was much older that she had given her life to Jesus when she was a young 13 year old. She had believed we were protected by those angels. It reads in Psalm 91 that ‘angels encamp around those who love the Lord’.
Angels Are an Integral Part of Your Life on this Earth
Have you equipped your children and grandchildren to know about angels and how they are there for us…how they listen to God’s Word spoken and believed by His people? I was too small at age 2 to thank God for my angels, but as your children grow, having a working knowledge of God’s Word is their protection….and even your protection.
You can purchase Do Angels Go Camping? by Donna Perugini here, a children’s story for ages 4-8 that explains angels and prayer. Take the time to build into your child’s spiritual foundation with this book. It gives them an understanding of God’s Word, prayer and their angelic protection.
Glad and thanking God that I’m still here to build into my own children and grandchildren’s lives!
Do you have any angel stories you can leave in the comments? We’d love to hear from you!
Oh, Donna how scary! I’m so thankful for angels!

Becky,
I only knew it was scarey as I became older. So many things happen to us when we’re little and we have no clue about how serious it is. Teaching our kids spiritual truths early and often is a real ‘help to them in a time of need’. Next to that is praying mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers.
I’m also thankful God thuoght of children when He gave them their own Guardian Angel to stay with them and minister to them throughout their lifetime.
What an amazing story! I am so thankful your Mom knew Jesus! I don’t have my own angel story like yours to share, but I do believe in Angels with all my heart and I share this belief with my daughters.

Linda,
You will find out all the angel stories in heaven. There were probably times you had no idea how close you came.
So glad you keep your children alert to angels in their lives!
Awe, how fortunate you guys are okay and that you were too young to remember such a scary experience!

Brook,
Agreed!!
I meant to say more here but I got called away. Sorry. 🙁 Thank you so much for dropping by my blog and leaving such good advice about showing our house. I briefly thought about when people come in to look but just assumed our agent would always be present and keeping an eye on things. I suppose that is not the case. :/ We have started moving things out and I generally either take smaller valuables with me or secure them in a lock box. But still, it is weird having strangers come through our home. :/
Wishing you all the best! P.S. I keep meaning to ask you, which of your books is best for a toddler girl? 🙂 I would like to get one as a Christmas gift. 🙂

Brook,
A really good book for the toddler girl would be The Adventure of Amelia Airheart Butterfly in bye! bye! Dragonfly! It’s the second book in my Orville series. She’d probably also like The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar. Amelia is a girlie-girl in the story…dressed in all pink.
You can see more on my blog by looking under the tab, Sneak a Peek or Book Trailers.
Groovy, thanks! I’ll look into those!
Best wishes!!!

Fascinating story. glad you were ok and lived to tell the tale! And many other tales!!!I believe in God and attend church with my husband and son every sunday. We also pray with him each morning and night. I really havent thought much about angels and guardian angels and I know lots of people who believe in them, yet are sceptical about God???

Claire,
Regarding angels, I imagine it’s easier for people to believe in angels that they have been told would help them rather than in God who gets blamed for so many bad things happening. Makes you wonder where they think angels came from doesn’t it?
One good reason to read the bible and decide for ourselves is found in John 10:10 “The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. I am come that you might have life and life more abundantly.”
