Children with Learning Disabilities and Success
Children With Learning Disabilities and Success
The question posed is, children with learning disabilities, can they succeed? The term, learning disabilities, can cause people labeled with this to feel ‘less than’ their peers, not intelligent, or just plain angry. We had a child with learning disabilities when it was something not understood and no help was in sight. After helping our child through elementary school, high school and having numerous meetings with teachers individually and as a group our child graduated high school and joined the Navy. I always told him he could go to college, he could succeed. But every time he’d pick up a book and try to read, he’d have to re-read the same paragraph over and over until he’d give up in frustration. He would misspell the same word at least three different way in one paper and he’d be unable to read and comprehend what he’d read, etc.
While in the Navy he took college courses and eventually took college courses in the city where he was based. Our son graduated from college with a Masters. He learned through a long process and pure determination to work around the learning disabilities he experiences.
Some Facts About Learning Disabilities
1. It’s a neurological disorder. The brain is ‘wired’ differently than someone who can fit into a conventional school system.2. Children with LD (Learning Disabilities) are as smart or even smarter than the other children.
3. They will experience difficulty if left to figure out things on their own or taught in conventional ways.
4. LD is a life long challenge.
5. LD children need support and intervention.
You’re going to need to put time into this child’s life…who knows them better than you? You know their strengths, weaknesses, and can help them with teachers and the school system. Their way of learning will be different than the other children. It doesn’t mean their way is wrong…it’s just how they’re brains are wired.
