Meet Ben the Amazing Grandson!

Meet My Amazing Grandson, Ben.

He’s a typical, Lego loving, friend of Star Wars nine year old boy.  (Photo is of younger aged, Ben)

Ben came over yesterday to help me move books, (my husband’s idea) then move cassettes to the next holding place until I invest in a machine that turns cassettes into Cd’s; move the ancient form of recording programs called ‘videos’ to the next holding place until my VCR dies and then he did ‘pick up’ jobs.

While going through the books to give to a friend’s garage sale, I told Ben he could have any books he wanted.  It took a while for him to understand that they were free.  The boy was so funny.  When the full impact of free hit him, he went to the Calvin and Hobbes joke books and then the Gary Larson joke books.  At first he only took two, then he just grabbed them all as they were being loaded onto the truck.  I also picked out a pirate book for him.

Do You Have More Jobs, Grandma?

The rest of the time he was here, he asked for more work (all of the work was predetermined as paying jobs) and ended up doing the toilets.  He said he loved doing toilets (no joke!).  Ben did such a fine job on the toilets, he felt energized and asked for more work.  I sent him out to pick up dogie piles.  It took him quite awhile, but he came in later and asked if there was any more work.  He almost wore me out trying to think up jobs for him.

We took a break together and I read to him from the pirate book.  I even tried to skip words I thought he wouldn’t understand and he pronounced them, telling me what they meant.  He said the book was actually interesting.  At one point he asked if he could read the jokes to me from the other books.  We laughed over Gary Larson’s silliness and genius.

How Much Do I Owe You?

I did run out of work for him and his mother (our daughter) came to pick him up.  He hugged and kissed me goodbye, turned to get into the car and announced in front of his mother that he couldn’t charge me anything….it was worth working for the cool books!  His mother and I looked at each other in shock!  I asked if he was sure, then thanked him.  His mom asked me how much would he have earned.  I told her we hadn’t decided that yet, but I’d be giving him a good tip in a few days.  I don’t want to ‘cheapen’ his kind deeds.

What He Loves

I love that he loves books, loves to clean toilets and then does it well, cleans up dogie piles and visits his Granny (as he kidingly calls me).  Nine is a fun age.  I don’t know what the next few years will bring, but for now I’m enjoying a wonderful boy that will grow up into a fine young man!

Do you have your own wonderful grandchild?  Love to hear your story!  Leave your comments!

Hi, Carrie! The picture is at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA. I had wondered how many people would think the chimp was real. It's a bronze statue that Ben mimicked for the photo.

He's been sitting on the chaise lounge at his house reading all the books. I also had a chair and ottoman I was getting rid of and he asked if he could have that too. He wanted to have it in his room so he could read in his own special chair. Anything to do with reading and I'm all for it!! The chair will be delivered tonight!! 🙂
