Exactly How Much Can I Get Away With?

Do your thoughts take a while to process through to you?

Maybe I’m slower to catch on than others or slower having information filter on through to my ‘aha center’.  Here’s something I hadn’t given much thought to, but it tells me a lot about myself and/or other people.

I received a birthday card that simply read, “Exactly how much can we get away with and still go to heaven?”  The card is humorous and plays on the fact that we do wonder how much we can ‘get away with’.  This thought is a carry-over from our childhood, but it’s also a thought we did not actively think on before doing what we wanted to do.  We just acted before actively considering about ‘how much can I get away with without getting into trouble’.

As children we think, but in a subconscious way,

  • how many cookies can I take from the cookie jar without mom noticing?
  • How many times can I tease my little sister and not get in trouble with my parents?
  • How many times can I run into the street after a ball before I meet up with a car head on?  You see, we don’t really think about it, we just get the partial idea and run with it….we act without thinking.

Now as adults we have the same thoughts that have become more noticeable, but we intentionally ignore them.

  • How fast can I drive without the cops noticing me?
  • How much can I cheat on my income tax without the Internal Revenue Service spotting me?
  • How much can I eat without my body getting larger or sick from the wrong foods?
  • How long can I not exercise before I lose the ability to move my joints and my muscles atrophy?

We flirt with things that do harm to us all the time knowing it will do harm to us. There’s a quote for that:

“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; now that I have become a man, I am done with childish ways and have put them aside.”
I Corinthians 13:11

As adults we have the ability to knowingly choose and make decisions.

If it harms us, put it down.  If it affects our health; step in the right direction.  If you’re drinking alcohol, you don’t drive. There are boundaries in life to keep us safe and to keep others safe around us..

There will be an end to our addictions: our flirting with the wrong thoughts and ideas.  There are always consequences and they won’t go away quietly.   Some consequences creep up on you and overwhelm your life…others show up quickly.

All our choices boil down to two things that either work for you or work against you.  You will either choose something that adds life to you or something that adds death to you.  Make at least one good choice today and keep stepping in that direction.  Then reevaluate and look at another.

Today you get to choose….choose life.

What do you think about intentionally ignoring what you know is right?  Leave your comments, share, like

Seems like we all have a little of this to deal with.

I know the way I have been able to change this in my life is by leaning on Someone bigger than me. The good work that He's started in me, He says He will finish it…and I'm counting on and cooperating with that!

I assume you are speaking of God and I totally, 100% agree that he is in my life as well.
