The Little Pot by Dawn Stephens..a Potter’s Review
The Little Pot Book Review by a Potter
Soon after a potter forms a new pot
and declares that he has important plans for his creation, the little pot begins to wonder what its purpose will be. Will it be used to hold important documents? Great riches? Beautiful flowers? As various expectations prove wrong, the little pot is cautioned to wait and see. Gradually Little Pot comes to realize that its creator knows best and has the most wonderful of all uses planned for it.
The Little Pot by Dawn Stephens, author/illustrator, is a Mom’s Choice Award for Honoring Excellence (a Disney Award); it has been ‘stamped’ with the Family Approved Award seal and has received the iParenting Media Award. Dawn says her book is “a simple yet profound story about inevitable reversals.”
Dawn is an amazing woman, wife, mother and Principal of Central Christian Academy, Portsmouth, Virginia. After becoming acquainted with Dawn and what her beautiful children’s book was about, all I wanted to do was ‘open her head and pour in all my knowledge of throwing pots’. I love the way the book begins; just like I begin when throwing pots.
“Each vessel was made with love and a special purpose in mind.” The next paragraph of the book is a wonderful jumping off point to the ‘profound story about inevitable reversals’………
“One day, the potter began making a little pot. He took special care to make it just the right size. And with his hands, he formed it into the exact shape that he desired. When he finished, he sat back and admired his creation, for he was very pleased.”
When I make pots or vessels, I have a shape, size and purpose in mind. It’s the same with God. When He makes us as vessels, He has everything already planned. We’re not accidental nor do we have something slapped on at the end to increase our value. He is pleased with us. He knows the beginning from the end.
I can imagine this book being used in a Women’s Conference titled, “Treasures in Vessels of Clay”. It’s actually already been done..by New Creation Fellowship in Elkhart, Indiana…and done very well. Unfortunately we did not have this book at the time to read to the women. I was able to get the teaching across as I threw the little pot, but the book would have added even more dimension to the conference teachings!

Dawn went through exactly the same ‘inevitable reversals’ that Little Pot did. During her last ‘reversal’ she was at home, minding her own business being an Author when the opportunity was presented to be the school’s Principal. She went to God about His plans for her life and waited patiently to hear what His leading would be. How would she balance being an Author and a Principal? How could she carry on being an Author with promotions, speaking engagements, etc.? God’s leading was to trust in Him and He would take care of the books. She became the Principal and then came the awards… one right after the other! He knows the beginning from the end.
The Little Pot can be enjoyed by all ages, but is particularly well liked by ages 3 to 7.

Dawn is still taking speaking engagements, so go to her site and give her a call. Read about her extensive background in education!
I'm so excited that authors are starting to write Christian children's books! When I was a kid, they were all very lame, to say the least 🙂
(by the way, I was introduced to your books by the blog Living My MoMent)
