Your Child’s Character and Your Faith
Do you imagine teaching your child character is like making them eat brussels sprouts?
The key to character building is sharing your own faith-filled values with your children. One of the best ways to impart your thoughts about character or your faith is to read a book that leads you to ask your child, “Well, what would you do in this situation?” Your child will consider and answer, then you’ll have a moment to tell him what you think about the subject, and how you would handle it.
Where do we find these children’s books? It depends on whether you want simple character building or do you want to go beyond into your spiritual beliefs.
Your child may be able to read the words, but do they comprehend what they just read?
As you read with your child, try these techniques to find out if he understands what is happening and to help improve his comprehension:
- Read the title of the story together and ask your child what he thinks will happen.
- Ask your child to “re-tell” the story after you’ve read it.
- Ask your child to create a “story board” with some quick pictures that show scenes in the book.
- Re-read the text several times. Experts recommend reading text passages up to four times.
Children’s Books are Designed for Reading Aloud
The ‘Orville series’ books by Donna Perugini are designed for preschool to age 8. The books will introduce children to new words and concepts, stimulate conversation, and present opportunities to ask open-ended, thought provoking questions like
“What would you do in that situation? Have you thought about doing what Orville Wright Caterpillar did?”
Reading aloud to your young children is one of the best ways to enrich their vocabulary and foster a love of books.
- The Flight of Orville Wright Caterpillar,
- The Adventure of Amelia Airheart Butterfly and
- Do Angels Go Camping
offer lively text and colorful illustrations. They deal with subjects that kids may know about, or may want to learn about:
- Friendship,
- Dreaming Big,
- New Life,
- Overcoming Fear,
- Lying Thoughts,
- Prayer, and
- Angels.
- Even if you don’t have children, but you know a child who could really grow with
the ‘Orville series’

You might even have that tape series in your library and always wondered what the book, Don’t Hug a Grudge was all about. Check out the Book Trailers and Sneak-a-Peek here to find out.
Leave your comments, love to read them!
I can’t help but think that had I been exposed to your books as a child (which I know I couldn’t have been because they weren’t written yet! [in book forum anyway!]) but IF I had, and had someone talk to me about the themes and characteristics contained in them, I might not need you as I do now to help me sort things out! In matters of my marriage, my children, even my own personal growth, you have wisdom for me. Those books contain wisdom God has given you, combined with the creativity and personality He’s given you. I think I will take a closer look at your books. Reading them to my grandchildren(when I have the opportunity) would promote discussion of the traits grandmas like to see in their grandkids!
PS I like your blog!
Now that you’re a grandma, Anita, you can still imprint your grandchildren. Sure it’s a little tougher unless the parents follow through on their end, but it’s still worth it! You also have prayer. You can pray for your grandchildren now, for their school years and future friends, for their future spouse. Yes, I know your grandson is just a few months old, but start now! Being a grandparent gives you a special position with your grandchildren. They think you’re ‘over the moon’ the best! They talk with you and listen to your ‘wise’ advice.
I believe in those books, so much so that we re-issued them for the children of today and the future. The next step will be ebooks for children all over the world.
Glad you stopped by and commented. Your thoughts and comments are read by thousands that take them to heart!
Great advice on seeing if they’re able to comprehend it. I would have never thought to do that. I’ll put this to use on my niece! Thanks!
